What is the Mercy of God?

๐Ÿ“– [Psalm 103:8-12 NKJV]

8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.

9 He will not always strive with us, nor will He keep His anger forever.

10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities.

11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;

12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

If God gave you what you deserved, where would you be?

Be honest.

If every secret sin, every selfish motive, every cruel thought, every broken promise, every moment of rebellion was met with immediate, proportional judgment, what would be left of you?

David knew the answer: nothing.

"He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities."

This is mercy. Not getting what you deserve.

Mercy (Hebrew: chesed) is one of the richest words in Scripture. It means steadfast love, loyal kindness, covenant faithfulness. It's the love that doesn't give up even when you deserve abandonment.

David used cosmic scale to describe it: "As the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy."

Look up. How far is the sky? You can't measure it. That's how great God's mercy is toward you.

"As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us."

East and west never meet. They stretch infinitely apart. That's how far God has moved your sin from you, not just forgiven, but removed, separated, placed beyond reach.

Mercy is not God overlooking sin. It's God absorbing the cost of sin Himself.

At the cross, justice and mercy met. God did not ignore your guilt, He transferred it to Christ. And now, instead of condemnation, you receive mercy.

What sin are you still dragging around, convinced God hasn't really forgiven it?

He has. It's gone. As far as the east is from the west.

May the grace of God through Christ be with you.
