Forgive and keep forgiving - The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

"'You wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?'" - Matthew 18:32-33

This story about forgiveness still touches our hearts today. Imagine someone who was forgiven a huge debt - so big they could never pay it back in their lifetime. But right after being forgiven, they turn around and roughly demand payment from someone who owed them just a tiny amount. This shows us how God's endless kindness compares to our own limited ability to forgive others.

When Jesus told Peter to forgive not just seven times but "seventy-seven times," He wasn't just giving a bigger number. He was teaching us that we shouldn't keep count when it comes to forgiveness. The huge difference between the two debts in the story (ten thousand talents versus a hundred denarii) shows us just how much God has forgiven us.

This story shows how easily we can forget. Just like that servant, we often forget how much God has forgiven us while holding grudges against others. Jesus teaches us that true forgiveness isn't just saying the words - it comes from truly experiencing God's forgiveness in our own lives.

When Jesus asks, "Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?" He's reminding us that we're not just people who receive forgiveness - we should pass it on to others too.

In my own life with God, I've learned that we can only truly forgive others when we're overwhelmed by how much God has forgiven us. We can't measure forgiveness like we measure other things - God's mercy is bigger than any calculations we could make.

The servant's punishment reminds us that refusing to forgive others doesn't fit with living in God's kingdom. When we hold back forgiveness, we're acting against the very kindness that brought us close to God.

God wants us to do more than just understand this - He wants it to change how we live. Here's what we need to do:

  • Remember every day how much God has forgiven us, and let that help us forgive others
  • Let Jesus help us become more understanding instead of judgmental
  • Let God's Spirit help us forgive others completely and sincerely

This story shows how God's kingdom works differently from our world. When we live this way, our lives show others the amazing power of God's forgiveness and bring honor to Jesus.
