True Obedience Over Empty Words - The Parable of the Two Sons

"Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said to Him, "The first." - Matthew 21:31
In this simple but powerful story, Jesus shows us the difference between just making promises and actually following through. His message gets right to the heart of what it means to truly follow Him.
Looking at this story closely, we can learn so much from it. The first son said no at first, but then felt sorry and changed his mind - this is what real change looks like. It's like when someone realizes they're going the wrong way in life and decides to turn around. This is exactly what happened with the tax collectors and other people that society looked down on - when they heard God's truth, they changed their lives completely.
The second son's story is a wake-up call for all of us. He said all the right things but didn't follow through - just like when people say they'll do something but never do it.
Jesus then says something that must have shocked everyone listening: the people that society rejected were actually closer to God than the religious leaders. Why? Because they admitted their mistakes and actually changed. This shows us that God cares more about honest change than about looking religious on the outside.
What does this mean for us today?
- Real change shows up in how we live, not just in what we say
- God's love reaches everyone, even people others might judge or reject
- Just knowing about God isn't enough - we need to let it change our hearts
We need to ask ourselves: Are we like the first son who actually changed, or the second son who just made empty promises?
Jesus wants us to do more than just talk about following Him - He wants us to show it in how we live. His kingdom works differently than what the world expects: people who admit their mistakes and truly change are closer to God than those who just try to look good on the outside.
So let's be honest about our mistakes, be willing to change when God shows us we need to, and focus on actually doing what's right instead of just talking about it. That's what being a true follower of Jesus is all about - not just calling Him "Lord," but actually doing what God wants.
