Letters to the BelieversBy BelieversAvenue

The Believer must be a truth-seeker

The Christian is a truth-seeker. That’s literally who we are. Jesus didn’t just come to talk about truth, He came as the truth itself. And He came at a time when people were truth-searching. There’s something in the human heart that just knows there has to be something more, something real, something true.

When Jesus stood before Pilate, He said, “For this reason I was born and came into the world: to testify to the truth.” That’s wild when you think about it. He didn’t come just to start a religion, He came to show humanity what is actually true. He was saying, “I am the evidence of what’s true and real.” But then Pilate asked, “What is truth?” That question says a lot about where that society was, and honestly, where I think we should be also.

Paul said the Jews were looking for signs and the Greeks were after wisdom. Different people search for truth in different ways. The Greeks were deep into philosophy. They would dissect every statement and try to figure out if it made sense, if it held weight. Their pursuit of truth was more intellectual, more about ideas and theories.

And then we see the Bereans in Acts 17. The Bible calls them fair-minded or noble people. I love that! Why? Because when Paul came preaching, they didn’t just reject what He was saying or just take his word for it. They went back, opened up the Scriptures, and checked. “Is this really true?” And when they found that it was, they believed. That’s the posture of a real truth-seeker. That’s the posture we should have in church too. Don’t just shout “Deep Deep” to everything, ask, “How is this true?” If Scripture said it, go to the scriptures and find out, and believe.

Honestly, that’s one of the reasons I don’t like unnecessary small talk. Most of the time, when you chat with people, pay close attention to what they say and you will realize that so much of what’s said isn’t even true or it’s about people - and those people aren’t even there to speak to it. If you asked them to say it to them, they will not. So what’s the point? Gossip, slander and lies have become so normal in the church, at our homes, yet we call ourselves “Christians”.

We like lies and are so afraid of the truth. So we don’t seek what is true about ourselves, what is true about others, and what is true even about God. We allow the devil to fill our heads and hearts with so much lies, that when we hear the truth, we get offended, we get annoyed, and we make up more lies to reject the truth.

But you see, when we live in lies, we will never be at peace. We never have true joy. We will never be free. We will never be free from the chains of the devil. Because he is the father of lies. One lie and that’s it, you believe it and everything falls apart. You are unhappy. Good relationships are destroyed. But Truth is what will set us free.

Let’s be people who actually care about what’s true. When Christ came, people were Christians because they were truth-seekers who found truth in Christ, not because they were born into it. That’s what we should be also. Let’s start with what’s true about ourselves. What’s true about others. What’s true about God. Because whatever you choose to believe, remember, that there is a way that seems right to a man, but the end there off is death. The lies in our heads and hearts won’t end us well.
