Renew Your Mind: Break free from the Patterns of the World

There are patterns in our minds that shape how we live our lives, how we see things, what we value most, what we do, and why we do what we do. Even the way we carry out these actions reflects these patterns in our minds. The Apostle Paul calls this “the patterns of the world.” I can look at how you live your life (the things you do, the way you think, the things you say) and tell whether you are free from the patterns of the world in your mind or not.
Now, when we talk about the world, we're referring to a set of standards and values, a way of thinking, a way of speaking, a way of living, and even a way of loving that is completely different from God’s will for us. This is what Paul is warning us against.
He’s telling us, "Don’t conform to the patterns of this world. Instead, be transformed by the renewing of your minds”. What the world considers good isn’t necessarily what God sees as good. What the world defines as success isn’t always success in God’s eyes. What the world thinks is wise is not God’s wisdom. The way the world sees things, does things, reacts to situations, that’s not how God wants us to live.
Take money, for example. The world teaches us to chase after it, to make it our highest priority. So we even abandon our families to pursue money. But God’s will for us is different: God wants us to seek His Kingdom and His righteousness first. His blessings makes us rich without painful toil. The world promotes self-centeredness, but God tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves, to serve others, and to put their needs above our own. The world pushes us to strive for competition, power, and fame, but God calls us to humility, to servanthood, to meekness.
Paul is urging us to break free from the mold of the world. Let your mind be renewed through God’s Word, by the power of the Holy Spirit. This renewal isn’t a one-time thing; it’s an ongoing process. It’s about continually aligning our thoughts, attitudes, and actions with God’s will. That’s how we can prove what God’s will truly is, His good, acceptable, and perfect will.
Here’s the thing: the world doesn’t know God’s will. They don’t know why God created the world, if He even created it, or if there’s a purpose behind all of this. They don’t know if there is any will concerning marriage. They don’t know if there is any will concerning family. They don’t know if there is any will concerning every thing and every life. But you know what? They can know it if they see it through us. By looking at our lives, they’ll see that God’s good, acceptable and perfect will. But that only happens if we’re living out that transformed life, which is free from those worldly patterns in our minds.
We can’t keep seeing things the way the world does and live like the world, and expect them to be saved. We’ve got to let go of those worldly ambitions, material pursuits, and break free from those societal pressures. We need to kill the love of the world in our hearts. We need to let go of the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.
We have to renew our minds to conform to Christ. We have to think like Christ, see things like Christ, speak like Christ, and love like Christ. That’s how the world will see the Father’s goodness and perfect will for humanity and come to salvation. That’s how they’ll know the good, acceptable, and perfect way to live this life.
