Jehovah Jireh, The Lord Will Provide

[Genesis 22:14 NKJV]

14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, "In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided."

"Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and offer him as a burnt offering."

Abraham had waited twenty-five years for this boy.

Abraham had waited twenty-five years for this boy. Isaac was the miracle. The promise. The fulfillment of everything God had said. Through Isaac, nations would be blessed. Through Isaac, Abraham's descendants would outnumber the stars.

And now God asked for him back.

The text does not record Abraham's emotions. It only records his obedience: "So Abraham rose early in the morning." He gathered wood. He saddled his donkey. He traveled three days to Mount Moriah.

Isaac carried the wood up the mountain himself. At some point, the boy noticed something missing: "Father, I see the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"

Abraham's answer was simple: "God will provide for Himself the lamb, my son."

He built the altar. Arranged the wood. Bound his son. Raised the knife.

"Abraham! Abraham! Do not lay your hand on the boy."

A ram caught in a thicket became the sacrifice. And Abraham named that place Jehovah Jireh (יְהוָה יִרְאֶה): "The LORD Will Provide."

The Hebrew word jireh comes from ra'ah, meaning "to see." God sees the need before you do and moves to meet it. Provision flows from vision, God perceives what you require and acts accordingly.

Notice the tense Abraham used. He did not name the place "The LORD Has Provided", past tense, memorializing a one-time event. He named it "The LORD Will Provide", future tense, pointing forward. As if to say: What happened here is not finished. This mountain has more to reveal.

Centuries later, on that same mountain range, God provided the ultimate sacrifice. Not a ram caught in a thicket, but His own Son, bearing the wood of His cross up the hill, becoming the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world.

Jehovah Jireh saw your need before you existed. And He moved to meet it at Calvary.

Here is the question this name asks: Where is God asking you to trust Him before you see the provision? The provision often comes at the point of obedience, not before it. Abraham did not see the ram until the knife was raised.

What step of faith are you delaying because you want to see the provision first?

May the grace of God through Christ be with you.
