El Shaddai, God Almighty

๐Ÿ“– [Genesis 17:1 NKJV]

1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless."

Abraham was ninety-nine years old. Sarah was eighty-nine. The promise of a son was now twenty-four years old, and still unfulfilled.

They had tried to help God along. Hagar. Ishmael. Human solutions to divine delay. It hadn't worked. Ishmael was not the promised child, and now the situation was biologically impossible.

Into this moment, God appeared with a name: "I am El Shaddai, God Almighty."

The timing matters. God did not reveal this name when Abraham was young and capable. He revealed it when Abraham's resources had run out completely. When the only way forward was miracle.

El Shaddai (ืึตืœ ืฉึทืื“ึทึผื™). The etymology is debated. Some connect Shaddai to the Hebrew word for "mountain", suggesting God as an immovable, unshakeable peak. Others link it to a word meaning "breast", emphasizing God as the one who nourishes and sustains. Most translate it as "Almighty" or "All-Sufficient."

What is clear is this: El Shaddai is the name God uses when He is about to do something impossible.

The ancient world believed in many powerful gods, but their power was limited. A storm god controlled storms. A fertility god helped crops grow. Each deity had a domain and a boundary.

El Shaddai has no boundary. His sufficiency is not partial. When He declares Himself "Almighty," He means there is no situation beyond His ability, no need beyond His provision, no dead end He cannot resurrect.

Notice the command that followed the name: "Walk before Me and be blameless." This is not a demand for perfection before blessing. It is a call to live in the reality of who God is. If El Shaddai is truly all-sufficient, then live like it. Stop striving. Stop scheming. Walk with integrity before the God who lacks nothing.

Within a year, Isaac was born. The impossible became actual.

Here is the question El Shaddai puts to you: Where have you reached the end of your own resources? Your strength is gone. Your solutions have failed. Your situation looks biologically, financially, relationally impossible.

That is not defeat. That is the setup for El Shaddai to work.

The God who gave a child to a ninety-year-old woman is the same God who meets you in your impossibility. His sufficiency does not depend on your capability.

May the grace of God through Christ be with you.
