Adonai, our Lord and Master?

[Psalm 8:1 NKJV]
1 O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, who have set Your glory above the heavens!
In ancient households, there was one word for the master of the house: Adonai (אֲדֹנָי).
Owner. Authority. The one whose word was final and whose will determined everything under his roof.
When David wrote, "O LORD, our Lord," he used two different names. The first, LORD in all capitals, is Yahweh, God's covenant name. The second, Lord, is Adonai, meaning Master, Sovereign, Owner.
David, the giant-killer who would become king of Israel, looked at God and declared: You are Yahweh, the self-existent One. And You are Adonai, my Master. I belong to You.
This combination is not accidental. It reveals something essential: the God of the universe is not just powerful, He is personal. He is not just transcendent, He is relational. The same God who set His glory above the heavens also enters covenant with people and calls them His own.
Here is an uncomfortable truth that most people would rather avoid: everyone serves something. Money. Approval. Control. Comfort. Security. Success. We all have a functional lord, someone or something whose word is final in our lives, whose demands we scramble to meet, whose approval we crave.
The question is not whether you will serve. You already do. The question is which master you will choose.
Jesus addressed this directly: "No one can serve two masters." And then He redefined what lordship looks like. The Adonai who deserves absolute obedience is the same Lord who washed His disciples' feet. Who served. Who laid down His life. Who rose again, proving that His way of leading actually works.
Those who submit to His lordship discover something unexpected: freedom. Not freedom from authority, that is an illusion. But freedom under the right authority. Freedom from the tyranny of lesser masters who promise much and deliver emptiness.
David's psalm does not end with obligation. It ends with wonder: "How excellent is Your name in all the earth!" When you see who Adonai truly is, submission becomes worship. Obedience becomes delight.
So what is competing with God for the throne of your life? What has been calling the shots that only Adonai should call? What lesser lord are you exhausting yourself to serve?
May the grace of God through Christ be with you.
